One of the things I miss the most since moving away from the US is diners. I have always loved diners. As a kid, the overwhelming choice of sweets on display was like heaven. As an adult, it’s the number of options on the menu that blows me away – how can they make so much and make it all good? I pray on a regular basis that someone will open a good diner in Oxford, but so far, my prayers have gone unanswered. Thankfully, I visit my family often in the States, and no trip goes by without a visit to the Ritz Diner in Livingston, NJ. The Ritz is an awesome diner. All diners are awesome, but the food at the Ritz is consistently good, which explains why it’s always crowded!
This morning, my sister and I took her two young nephews out for a special breakfast. They shared the biggest stack of chocolate chip pancakes I’ve ever seen. (note: i’m hiding upstairs writing this post while they run around downstairs, all sugared up yelling ‘Power Rangers!’ and jumping all over the furniture).
I was a bit more tame, and went with an egg white omelet with feta and mushrooms with dry whole wheat toast. The mushrooms are fresh – no canned fare here, and the feta was nice and warm and gooey – just how I like it. The coffee is strong and never-ending. The staff are great – fast and friendly. I’m in a bit of a food and caffeine coma at the moment, which is a really great feeling. There’s nothing better than a weekend diner breakfast, in my opinion.
When I googled the Ritz Diner to get the address, I was surprised to see it was featured on the food network. But then again, I wasn’t really surprised. But I was happy they recognised this awesome diner. Next time, I’m definitely going for the apple pie!
