My third and final sushi restaurant in Cambridge was Japas. There is a fourth – U Sushi on Burleigh Street, but 3 sushi restaurants in 2 days is quite an accomplishment. Four is a bit of overkill, even for me. Besides, it doesn’t look as inviting as the other three. I checked.
Japas is located near the intersection of Lensfield Road and Trumpington. It’s slightly off the beaten track and you have to be looking for it to find it. But that didn’t seem to be a problem as it was pretty full at lunchtime, with 90% of the diners being Japanese. The decor of the restaurant is just okay. I sat at a table on the lower level, and the ceiling was a little low and the room was a little warm. I also tried really hard not to judge the cleanliness of the kitchen based on the nasty bathroom, which I had the misfortune of visiting to wash my hands before I ate. It left me feeling a little skeeved out, unfortunately. But I ignored my gut because the food being served around me looked just beautiful.
Hubs again went for the salmon bento box, adding on a Rock & Roll uramaki roll- tempura prawn, salmon, avocado & tempura bits.
Still reeling from my disappointing eel at J, I ordered Unagi Don, which is barbecued eel over rice. And a side order of a salmon maki roll. The salmon came first, and the rolls were perfectly delicious. It’s almost impossible to screw up a salmon roll. Next came my Unagi Don. My beautiful, lovely, delicious Unagi Don. Served on a giant bowl of rice, the eel was practically drowning in the sweet, sticky sauce, which trickled down to cover every last grain of rice. It was heaven! When I wrote in an earlier post that I usually save the eel for last because it’s like dessert to me, this Unagi Don was the dessert of the whole trip. Save the best for last! It was just amazing. Hubs said his food was also the best tasting of the trip (except he didn’t like the unadvertised spicy red sauce on the rock and roll). So, Japas may not have clean bathrooms (blerrg), and its decor is not the fanciest, but the food is excellent, and that counts for a lot.
