Giant Robot on Clerkenwell Road in London is a cool and quirky restaurant. They serve brunch, lunch, dinner and drinks from 10am til late, seven days a week. I visited for Sunday brunch, on the nicest day of the summer so far, and was very happy there was a table available outside. It wouldn’t have mattered much if we ate inside, because the whole front of the restaurant opens. But still, I love eating outside because of the great people watching.
Giant Robot has a very cool interior. I love the quirkiness of the decor, though be aware, there is no actual giant robot that I could find. The menu is also a little quirky, with ‘Balls’ being the centre of attention. You choose your ball (beef with tomato sauce and oregano, lamb with spicy tomato, mint and coriander, or veal with porcini cream, parmesan and tarragon), and choose your side of either spaghetti, olive oil mash or arugula and shallot salad. Too bad they didn’t have a vegetarian ball, because it seemed so enticing! And if small meat dishes are your thing, they also have a variety of sliders.
There’s not a huge range of choices for someone with my eating habits on the regular menu, but they were serving the brunch menu on Sunday, and there was plenty of choice! I went with the smoked salmon scrambled eggs on a bagel. Unimaginatively, so did the hubs, so I sadly couldn’t try a second dish. The bagel was a plain, white bagel (I would have preferred brown or grainy), but the eggs were perfectly cooked – light and fluffy – and the smoked salmon was plentiful, being both under and on top of the eggs. It was delicious!
To wash down our brunch, we tried the DIY Bloody Mary’s. It was hard to resist! You get a small pitcher of vodka (enough for about 1 1/2 drinks each), a carafe of tomato juice, lemon wedges, cucumber slices (that was a bit strange, as I’m more accustomed to celery), Tobasco sauce, Worcestershire sauce, and a small pot of port to top off your drink with. It was fun and it was delicious!
I highly recommend visiting Giant Robot for a meal or just for drinks. It’s a great restaurant, and I look forward to going back.
