Fitzbillies, Cambridge. Listed Art Nouveau exterior

While in Cambridge last week, I found myself with an hour to kill while my husband was finishing up a meeting. I was thoroughly shopped out and in need of refueling. I popped into Fitzbillies Cafe on Trumpington for a green tea. There’s great wifi in the cafe, but not the best phone service, so in order to listen to a voice mail, I had to go up to the front of the shop. That’s when I saw them…

Sitting innocently, piled high on a cake stand were the Chelsea Buns. I had completely forgotten that a friend told me to get one last time I was in Cambridge, and I didn’t. But there they were, glistening in their gooeyness, calling to me. They looked a little on the small side (wouldn’t bust the diet too badly), and I knew my husband would be joining me shortly, so I ordered one for us to share.

What arrived at my table was far larger and more enticing than what was at the front counter. Perhaps the ones for the customers eating in the cafe are slightly different (better) than the ones for takeaway. I somehow managed to wait for my husband to show up before I tucked in, which was probably a good thing because I don’t think I would have had the self control to stop at half. I had this vision of him arriving just as I took the final bite, with gooey cinnamon syrup running down my chin and a half crazed, half supremely satisfied grin on my sticky face. We both stated we were only going to have a bite or two, which is hilarious, because the bun disappeared in record time. I don’t know who we were trying to convince.

The Chelsea Buns at Fitzbillies in Cambridge are everything I heard about and then some. They are legendary.  The cafe ships them worldwide, so no matter where you are when you are reading this, you can enjoy them in all their sticky glory. I highly recommend you order some today!
